Week 5: Typo 5 Understanding
Understanding Letterforms
- At first glance, many uppercase letters may appear symmetrical, but there are subtle asymmetries. For example, the letter A in the Univers typeface features one stem slightly thinner than the other. Small adjustments enhance the internal harmony of the letterform, making it feel balanced and visually appealing.
Maintaining X-Height
- Letterforms with curved strokes (like e, o, or c) often extend slightly above the median line or dip below the baseline. This optical adjustment ensures they appear visually consistent in size next to letters with straight horizontal or vertical strokes.
Form and Counterform
- Counterform refers to the negative space inside and around letterforms. It plays a crucial role in legibility. By studying existing counterforms, designers can better understand how to craft readable, aesthetically pleasing type.
Letterform Contrast
- Contrast in typography helps differentiate and organize content. This includes differences in type weight, style, size, or color, all of which work together to emphasize hierarchy and clarity.
Instructions
Task 2: Typographic Exploration & Communication
We started off this task by getting an in depth step to step tutorial from Mr Max. Once that was done in class, we could start going on Pinterest to get some inspiration for our 6 layouts. We were allowed to use all 3 texts, so we were not restricted to only 1 text for all 6 artboards. We started off designing these layouts in Illustrator to then finalize in InDesign. I chose to do a little bit of all texts:

On Friday's class (6/6/2025), Mr Max conducted a consultation class, so I went for feedback, he thought they were creative, but ultimately chose the 1st art board for me explore. So, during the class I created 5 more layouts (Figure 2):

Mr Max ultimately chose the bottom right design, so with some final edits, I exported it to InDesign and added text. Played around with the text boxes and ended up with the final product (Figure 3):

Feedback
Week 6
Specific Feedback:
Started working on the layouts in class, looked for inspiration from Pinterest. I made 2 designs in class and Mr Max liked them but needed slight work and then concluded class.
General Feedback:
No content in class, more of a consultation class.
Week 7
Specific Feedback:
While the 6 designs were nice, I explored different titles, he liked the 1st one from week 6 as the layout, suggested to play around with the layout. Artboard 4 was a good idea, but there were some inconsistent with the inspiration photo and to maybe fix that so it is more consistent with it. But overall Mr Max said to focus on playing around with the layout of Artboard 1.
General Feedback:
No content in class, more of consultation class.
