Realism vs Surrealism

Realism focuses on ordinary, everyday life, grounded in what's real and familiar. It avoids fantasy, imagination, or the extraordinary, staying strictly within the bounds of reality.

Surreal, on the other hand, is a creative twist on realism. It dives deep into the subconscious mind, drawing from dreams and irrational thoughts to distort the ordinary and challenge logic. It blends the familiar with the bizarre to create something entirely unexpected.

Origins & Influences

Surrealism was heavily inspired by Freud's theories of the unconscious and evolved from the rebellious Dada movement, which used satire and nonsense to protest war and societal norms.

Artists like Salvador Dalí brought surrealism to life, using strange imagery, dream logic, and free association to break creative boundaries.

Digital Surrealism

In today's digital era, surrealism thrives as a popular digital art style. Tools like Photoshop make it easier than ever to create surrealist compositions through photo manipulation, photomontage, and conceptual photography.

How to Create Surreal Art

Dream Like Scenes: Symbolic, strange, and visually intriguing.
Unexpected Juxtapositions: Combine unrelated elements in ways that defy logic.
Odd Assemblages: Mix ordinary objects into surreal, new contexts.
Sketch Your Vision: Start rough with a basic layout of your idea.
Collect References: Find real world images to support your concept.

Creative Mindset

Aim for realism in execution, surrealism is most effective when it almost feels real.
