Color Theory Overview
Color theory blends science and art to explain how we perceive colors and how they influence emotions and communication in design.

Color Systems
RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
  • Used in screens (TVs, monitors, projectors).
  • Colors are made by adding light (additive model).
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black)
  • Used in printing
  • Colors are created by subtracting light (subtractive model).

Color Basics
  • Hue: The pure base colors (e.g. red, blue)
  • Shade: Hue + black (e.g. red + black = burgundy)
  • Tint: Hue + white (e.g. red + white = pink)
  • Tone: Hue + grey (mix of black and white)
Color Harmony in Design
Color harmony is all about combining colors in a way that's pleasing and effective for the viewer.
  • Monochromatic: Variations of one color. Simple, safe, and cohesive.
  • Analogous: 3 neighboring colors on the color wheel. Harmonious with 1 dominant hue.
  • Complementary: Opposite colors on the wheel. Bold and high contrast, but can overwhelm if overused.
  • Split-Complementary: 1 base color + the 2 adjacent to its opposite. Balanced contrast.
  • Triadic: 3 colors evenly spaced on a wheel. Vibrant, dynamic, and well-balanced.
Psychology of Color
Color affects mood and perception. While individual responses can vary, certain colors tend to trigger similar emotions:
  • Warm Colors (red, orange yellow)
    • Energetic, cheerful, and attention grabbing, but can also signal urgency or danger.
  • Cool Colors (green, blue, purple)
    • Calming and peaceful, sometimes evoking sadness. Purple blends intensity and calm.
  • Black
    • Sophisticated, mysterious, bold. Often used for contrast or elegance.
  • White
    • Clean, pure, and versatile. Works well with nearly any color.

Practical
Before choosing my final sketch, I was having a hard time creatively with the honors assignment, so it took me a bit longer to figure out what I wanted to do. I played around with other compositions, but they were just not working out in my favor.
